Chamotte stoneware is to pottery what brutalism is to architecture. It highlights the wild and natural aspect of clay and perfectly suits Slow Potter’s minimalist and unpretentious style. It is made by mixing clay with chamotte particles, which are actually pieces of fired and ground clay. This combination gives chamotte stoneware great resistance to heat, compression and traction, which explains why it is used not only to create robust ceramics but also many industrial products. What Le Corbusier said about concrete could also be perfectly applied to chamotte sandstone: “May these harsh materials reveal that, beneath them, our sensibilities are fine”.
